The forecast promised to be cloudy, wind SE 5-10 knots waves around 1 foot. For the folks coming from Burlington Bay, the waves turned out to be 2 1/2’ to 3’ in the broad lake, with confused seas. Chaz Link rode in his lovely “Drake” a 26’ Lyman Cruisette Hardtop, Don Spring and a new member, Bob Davis, rode in “Portabella,” Don’s 1931 22’ Gar Wood, and Dana, Catherine Hughes and I rode over in “Susan,” our 1940 16’ Lyman Yacht tender. I think the best description of the three different cruises was for Chaz, a bit rough, but not worth mentioning. Don and Bob had a very rough ride over, including a barrage of rough language could be heard over the smooth running engine. For Catherine, Dana and I in “Susan” it was very wet. Catherine on the windward side of the front seat did her best to act as a human shield, but her raincoat was no match for the splash. She said it was like someone throwing a 5 gallon bucket of water over her every 30 seconds. Dana did a great job piloting over, we didn’t pound a lot, but there wasn’t a dry patch of fabric anywhere on the three of us. I’m afraid I didn’t get any pictures of the ride over, since we were getting so wet. Chaz kept watch of us as we crossed, trying to get between us and the wind and waves. It was really nice of him to hang with us, and we are lucky to have such a supportive friend in our chapter. Through the water in our eyes we saw him standing in the back of his boat watching us rather than at the helm. That boat must have autopilot!
Ed Hackett and Pat were there with “Naulahka”, Andy Prescott was there from Port Douglas with “Gigi,” Susie Becker drove, and so did Rich Butler, all the way from Duxbury, VT. Rich had a spare pair of shorts in his car that he loaned to Catherine, and Dana bought a commemorative Indian Bay pullover from their shop. The food was excellent, the service was fantastic, there was a young man helping to dock and undock, and we had a really good time. While we were there the wind settled down and the seas quieted so the trip back was dry with SE wind waves about 2’. There are only a few photos from my cell phone I’m afraid, all taken at the last minute. Here they are:
