Jody and Diane Lapham from Bridport, VT have
two long time projects well under way.
A 19' 1903 Lozier Launch built in Plattsburg,
NY
and a 27' 1926 Fay & Bowen Longdeck built
in Auburn, NY
First the Lozier...

Myndy's influence is apparent
with these nice plank repairs....

Lozier upside down - caulked and painted (Nov. '06)
Lozier being rolled - note belaying rope (wrapped twice around pin of
beam clamp) Worked great. Weigths ~80 lbs
Hope to float her in the next few days. To see if seams spit out caulk.

Lozier:

The hull....................
I put her in the water, and she took on some water fairly
quickly. This was due to a woodruff key slot (without a key)
right at the shaft log packing. After that she continued leaking at a
lower rate for a couple of hours. Didn't spit caulking at any seams I
pulled her because of anticipated high winds. The high winds did came,
much higher than predicted, and I was glad to have her out of the
water. I have a scheme to soak her up in the shop. .....A 19ft pan
made of roof flashing.
The Engine....................
There is a gearbox on a Universal Model C that has a hand
crank starter that is chained to a sprocket and ratchet on the input shaft.
I put the gearbox on, and found the engine was rotating right, just
opposite of what was needed for the ratchet mechanism associated with the
hand crank.
Since the engine I am working on is a combination of two, I deduced that I
had the cam from the other that didn't have a gear box and hand crank, and
which must have been right turning. Took off gear box, oil pan, and the
cams were the same. Took off head, checked valve timing and
found I had perfect timing --for a left engine. This cost me a week
and a half and untold numbers of gray cells lost due to thinking over load. I
even accused my brother of assembling the gearbox backwards..
Distributor rotation remains a question - see image. Pse reply if you can...
The Universal Motor Company sold these engines with a 12/12 three bladed
propeller. Michigan Wheel ran an analysis for the boat and motor with data
given by me. They recommended a 9/6 3 blade. Comments pse..
Looking for more Universal MOD C and Universal MOD BN (Utility 4)engines.
