Letter from the President

The summer seems to be getting off to a slow start. The lake temperature is having trouble breaking through the 60 degree mark (mid-June) which has made boating, for those who got a good jump on the season, a little on the chilly side. This too will change, given our recent weather. Does any one remember the weather in 1985?

Twenty years ago… Ronald Reagan’s 2nd term begins. Mikhail Gorbachev becomes leader of the Soviet Union. Robert Ballard used “Argo” to discover the RMS Titanic. Terry Anderson is taken hostage in Beirut. ‘New’ Coke is released. The space shuttle Challenger made three successful flights to space. Achille Lauro is hijacked. Movies that year: ‘Out of Africa’, ‘Back to the Future’ and ‘The Color Purple’. A hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica is discovered. At Indian Bay Marina in Willsboro, New York, 30 people signed a petition to form the Lake Champlain Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society. The names are too numerous to mention, but a few should be very familiar to many of you: Gary and Howard Wilson, Jack Poirier, Bill Miller, Stephen Ladue, Don and Jan Dean and Todd Burley.

The point of this reflection is to put historical perspective on the origins of our organization. I would like to formally thank all those who took the time and effort to recognize the need for a club like this and to plant the seed that would eventually grow to over 100 members from both sides of Lake Champlain.

As we look forward to the summer boating season, there are a number of exciting 2005 events planned. We had our first biweekly “Lake Rendezvous” on June 12th. Four boats and a dozen people gathered for lunch at the Rudder Club at the Essex Shipyard. The next Rendezvous is scheduled for June 25th at Hero’s Welcome in North Hero. Hopefully, the water depth at the Sandbar Bridge will enable boats to navigate from Malletts Bay through to the “Inland Sea”, making the journey more direct.

The Summer Cruise in July (the weekend of July 8th and 9th) is being hosted by the Adirondack Chapter of ACBS in Old Forge, New York and will include a tour through the lakes of the Fulton Chain. Contact Tom Anderson or Mike O’Brien for further details regarding this cruise.

The annual show is August 20th in Essex, New York and should be another great time. The Board of Directors voted to dedicate the show in memory of Bill Ladue. We would like to compile a collection of Bill-related stories for the program. If Bill’s dedication to the boat collecting hobby has touched you in some way, or if you have stories to tell, please feel free to submit them. The availability of rooms could be a little tight, there is wedding in town! Contacts for the show are John and Anne Weeks.

Wings, Wheels and Keels returns to Basin Harbor in September, so mark your calendar and check the website for updates (lcacbs.com).

I would like to thank Mike O’Brien and Larry Asam again for all the work they have been doing to keep the communication lines flowing.

Hope to see you on the lake soon.

Steve Pond

President
