The theme of the LCACBS 2009 Boat Show in Westport, N. Y. "400 Years of Boating on Lake Champlain" is also the theme of the Quad events planned in Burlington in 2009. Rendezvous' for our club will be planned with the Quad activities in mind.

2008 AWARDS PRESENTATIONS

1. MERIT AWARDS: Merit Awards are given each year by the judging committee to boats and owners that demonstrate a high level of skill and craftsmanship in keeping or returning the boat to original condition. This year a total of four merit awards were given:

“TRUE NORTH” a 1959 Lyman 23’ soft top, owned by Gene Porter and Nancy Garceau.

“SEQUOIA” a 1948 Chris Craft Deluxe runabout, owned by Jeff and Vallerie Greenfield.

“SILK PURSE” 1935 Chris Craft 18’ utility, owned by Gary Wilson.

“FRISBIE”, a 1928 Hacker Craft 26’ triple, owned by Don Lilly and Linda Bailey.

The John Ladue Award. The Ladue award is a rotating award given by the judging committee to the boat and owner that best represents the spirit of antique and classic boating envisioned by one of our chapter’s founding members. John believed that boats should be used and enjoyed, and that the enjoyment of a boat should overshadow the desire to keep it in pristine restored condition. This year the John Ladue Award was given to “NAULAKHA”, a 1938 Elco 30’ Marinette, owned by Ed and Lois Hackett.

The Best Lyman Award is a rotating award created by the Shelburne Shipyard, once a Lyman dealer, to the boat identified by the judging committee as the best Lyman at the show. This year the Best Lyman Award was given to “RIVENDELL”, a 1955 Lyman 18’ Islander, owned by Ed and Betsy Bouton.

The Best Chris Craft award is sponsored by the Chris Craft owners Association which provides the award. He award goes to the boat identified by the judging committee as the best Chris Craft at the show. This year the judging committee selected “BABE”, a 1927 Chris Craft 26’ runabout, owned by Skip Shipman as the Best Chris Craft recipient. Unfortunately, I have not yet received the award from the Chris Craft association. They have assured me that it will either be sent directly to the winner, or they will forward it to me and I will forward it to Skip.

We now move into the Best of Class awards which are determined by “Peer Judging” by the skippers of the boats entered in the show. A total of nine Best of Class awards was given at this year’s show.

Best of Class for “PULLING BOAT”. This year we invited owners of antique guideboats and wood/canvas canoes to join us at Westport as a way of recognizing the link between Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Park. The winner of the pulling boat class was the 1997 Adirondack Guideboat built and owned by Chris Woodward of Woodward Boat Shop.

Best of Class for “LAUNCH”. The winner of this award is a new boat to our show and was great fun to see put putting around the harbor. I’m sure that we all enjoyed seeing “CEDRIC” 1948 Gravette Disappearing Propeller launch owned by Myndy and Kate Woodruff. “CEDRIC” is powered by a single cylinder 6hp engine.

Best of Class for “CONTEMPORARY/REPLICA” This years winner for contemporary replica goes to “HANNAH & SARAH”, a 2007 24’ cruiser built by the owner along with Jeff Kerr, and owned by Judith L. and Liam English.

Best of Class for “RUNABOUT”. This year’s award goes to a boat that is new to our show, a 1958 Chris Craft Capri powered by the aoriginal 1958 KFL engine. “12 HORSE” is owned by Paul and Ann Marie Conolly.

Best of Class for “LAPSTRAKE UTILITY”. This year’s winner is a boat that, to my mind, was almost totally transformed this past year with the new deck. It is a 1966 LYMAN 19’ soft top, “MOLLY B”, owned by Mike and Molly O’Brien. The boatr is powered by a 1965 Gray 150 hp engine.

Best of Class for “UTILITY”. This year’s winner is a boat that has appeared at our shows for many years. “IMPROMPTU” is a 1951 Chris Craft 23’ Holiday, owned by Keith and Beth Gaylord. “Impromptu is powered by a 1968 Crusader.

Best of Class for “CRUISER”. This winner is a boat that first appeared at out show last year and wowed us all. It is a 1951 Steelcraft 28’ express cruiser, powered by the original 1951 90 hp gray engine. “STEELIN’ AWAY” is owned by Lee and Jeanne Moll.

Best of Class for “OUTBOARD”. This year the winner in this class is “MISS HANDY BOY”, a 1959 Peterborough 15’, powered by a 1958 Evinrude engine. “MISS HANDY BOY” is owned by Thierry Guerlain and Julie Henderson.

Best of Class foe “SAIL”. For the first time in quite a few years there were no large cruising sailboats at our show. The winner in this class is a 10’ Acorn rowing/sailing skiff that was built during the winters of 2000-01 and 2001-02. “TWO WINTERS” is owned by Mike Munson and his family and was built by Mike.

“PEOPLES’ CHOICE” award is selected by public vote at the show. This year the award goes to “THE WAVE”, a 1930 Chris Craft 24’ Triple, owned by Robert Beach, Sr. “THE WAVE is powered by the original 125 hp Chrysler engine.

“THE MOST ORIGINAL/BEST PRESERVED BOAT” award is sponsored by the ACBS International as a way of encouraging boat owners to preserve their boats instead of taking them apart and rebuilding them with new wood. In y mind this is one of the most important awards given, and really reflects the spirit and intent of our chapter. This year the award goes to a boat that is new to our show. “G_MOM” is a 1955 Alumacraft 14’ Twin Cockpit Runabout, powered by a 1928 Johnson 25. Alumacraft first produced a runabout in 1954. “G_MOM” is owned by Jay and Anita Ancel, and shares storage space with their classic Airstream trailer.

And here we are--- the “BEST of SHOW” award. This award is given by the judging committee to the boat which the committee viewed as demonstrating all of the qualities that the chapter and its show stand for. A boat that is kept in immaculate condition, and that is used and enjoyed regularly, and that is a frequent participant in our shows. “MISS MAGIC” is a 1963 Chris Craft Sea Skiff 32’ Cruiser. She is powered by twin 235 hp Chris Craft engines. “MISS MAGIC” is owned by Bill and Alexandra Aldrich.
