JUNE 2006 SOUNDING
LAKE CHAMPLAIN CHAPTER ACBS
UPCOMING EVENTS:
Wednesday, June 7 Director's Meeting 5 PM at the Truex Cullen conference room.
All members are welcome. Dinner afterward at the Shanty.
Sunday, June 18 Club Rendezvous High noon. Come by land or sea (or LCT Ferry)
to the Old Dock House, Essex, NY
Saturday, July 8 Club Rendezvous(s) plural? For those of you at the north end
of the Lake, a noon lunch stop at Hero's Welcome in North Hero is scheduled.
This is a fun place to gather.
For those of you in the southern hemisphere, try the noon rendezvous at
Westport, NY. This is the Carroll family's 25th year at the Marina and they
have planned a day of festivities. They are planning on our classic boats to
decorate the waterfront, so be there!
Sunday , July 23 the club will rendezvous for 6:30 PM dinner at the Upper
Deck, Willsboro Marina, NY
Jan Dean stepped up to the plate and is now managing the club poker tour. You
will get to draw a card at each of the club events and the big winners will be
announced at the annual meeting in the fall on Northern Lights. Thank you,
Jan!
Now that the Club Rendezvous season is getting into full swing, it would be
nice if someone would step up and take over the program. Scope out the dock
and food scene, give the restaurateur a rough head count , come up with a
program for next year, etc.
Here is a wild card. Kate and I took a Windjammer cruise last fall in the
southern Caribbean and it was wonderful. Pull up Windjammer.com and check out
Yankee Clipper. They have a neat trip that starts from St. Lucia and goes south
with stops at St. Vincent, Bequia, Union Island and other gorgeous ports. The
boat is an old schooner that has been refitted nicely. It is very informal, but
has comfortable cabins, great staff and world class cruising grounds. As a group
we will get a discount, but for planning purposes a Captains Cabin is $1,500 per
person for the week and airfare from Boston on AA is $697. We are going and hope
you will join us. Please call or email me soon if you are interested.
Thank you Clem and Patty Couture for arranging the Plattsburg Spring Meeting.
Sarah Lyman (is she Clinker Built?) from the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum
gave a very interesting talk on the history of the Lake during the canal boat
period and showed slides of the Lois McLure's trip down the Hudson. I am still
wowed by the fact that Burlington was the country's third most active port,
exporting Vermont lumber et al. We missed that era, but the remnants are
interesting.
Your Boat Show Committee has been working diligently for the August 19 &
20 event, as you know from the email updates. As of this date, a record thirty
one boats have signed up to overnight at the Boat House. Please get in your
registrations and boat histories ASAP. We need to have out act together for
this one. This will be a very busy weekend for everyone on the waterfront.
Burlington Maritime Days plus the Air Guard and the USAF Thunderbirds = WOW!!!
And we have the front row seats! By the way, the crowds will be huge and
wouldn't this be a great opportunity to promote your business by being a Show
SPONSOR! If you can help contact me or Mike O'Brien.
Soak your boat first. This will be fun. Myndy
