A Tour of the Hacker Boat Co.
The tour began at the winter storage
building. This building is full to capacity about fifty boats; Hackers,
Lymans and an occasional Chris Craft. Following the tour Lynn
Wagemann, President and CEO of the Hacker Boat Co., gave
us a brief historical overview of the company from the early years, John
Hacker the boat builder, to Bill Morgan who started building reproductions
to the present. The key point here is that Lynn purchased the boat
building facility from Bill Morgan but more important he was able to
research and purchase the rights to the "Hacker" name domestically and
internationally.
After the overview we off to the woodshop.
There were three boats in various stages of production. Lynn presented
each stage and explained in detail the new design changes and production techniques
he has made to improve the Hacker of today. Then we were off to
the finishing shops where we saw various stage of finishing from varnishing
to trim to upholstery.
The company has an upholstery shop as well as
another storage and restoration shop in Ticonderoga. Lynn explained that
they fabricate all the parts necessary in the fabricating process except for
the windshield. They employ 24 craftsmen and work seven days a
week... All and all with Lynn's vision he has taken the Old Hackercraft
product, repackaged it and marketed it as" The New and Improved Hacker
Boat Co.
