IN THE WAKE OF CHAMPLAIN: THE SHALLOP PROJECT

The Henry Sheldon Museum in Middlebury, Vermont is working with Douglas
Brooks, a local boat builder, on a project to build a replica of the
shallop that Samuel de Champlain used to travel from his base in Quebec
to our region in 1609.  The project is part of the region-wide
Quadricentennial celebrations planned for 2009.  The shallop, a
thirty-foot long rowing and sailing vessel, will be built as a public
demonstration on the grounds of the Sheldon Museum from September, 2008
until May, 2009.  Her construction will be traditional, and the public
will be invited to participate in the project as volunteers and through
workshops on tradiitonal boat building.  The completed vessel will take
part in a boat parade planned for the length of the Richilieu River and
the shallop will sail to Burlington for the main Quadricentennial
celebration in July, 2009.  The museum has just begun raising funds for
the project, and total projected costs for construction, exhibits,
educational outreach and operation are $80,000.  People interested in
learning more about this project and how they can contribute can
contact Jan Albers, director of the Sheldon Museum or Douglas Brooks,
Project Manager.
